NTC Shows
“NTC’s productions may be small-scale and done on a ‘shoestring’ but they are backed by a team which can match anything done by much bigger, purpose built theatres and whose imagination and ability to weave a storytelling magic as they transform unpromising spaces into theatres for the night is second to none”
“Northumberland Theatre Company is renowned for highly inventive theatre. The cast of four plays many parts as they retell eight less well-known Grimm Tales, each one gripping in its own way.”
“This was storytelling at its best; imaginative, atmospheric and physically exciting with plenty of audience participation, humour and music”

An original story by Philip Harrison
with music by Jacob Harrison
Produced by NTC Touring Theatre Company Ltd.
In Redcar, just off the northeast coast, an old man sits with the tide and remembers when film stars came to these waters and giant fish rose from the deep.
Now his days are marked by diminished worth and the small humiliations of age.
Yet beneath his bitterness lives a stubborn faith: that the monsters have returned,
and that one final voyage might restore the name the world has nearly taken from him.
He sets out to catch what others no longer believe in, accompanied by a young protege drawn into the legend and labour of the hunt.
Together they sail into uncharted waters, where the past resurfaces and the future offers no mercy—only the chance to test what remains of their courage.
Each man is chasing more than the great creature beneath the waves; each is trying to prove something to himself and to a world he has learned to resent.
Told with humour and pathos, this darkly comic play examines what it means to be old and young in the great ocean of life,
where dignity can be as fragile as a line in the surf and legacy as elusive as a shadow under the waves.
It is a story about longing to be seen,
and about the strange grace found when two souls,
separated by age but joined by need,
venture into the deep together.
